The standard alumina-silica lining was being subjected to an extreme chemical attack far beyond what it was designed for. The combustion of municipal solid waste releases a volatile and highly corrosive mix of chlorine, sulfur, and alkali vapors. These chemical agents were infiltrating the refractory’s pores and reacting with its mineral structure, causing it to rapidly corrode, weaken, and spall away.
The Solution: A Shield of Silicon Carbide
Understanding the chemical nature of the failure, the Pennekamp team recommended a strategic upgrade for the furnace’s hot-face lining in the most aggressive zones. The solution was to replace the standard material with a high-performance refractory based on Silicon Carbide (SiC).
This advanced material, supplied as a dense, high-strength brick, was installed in the lower furnace and other high-wear areas to act as a durable shield against the aggressive process environment.
